5. Consonants К, Г and Х

The letter Г denotes the “hard” sound [g] when followed by letters А, О, У, Э, and the “soft” sound [gʲ] when followed by И, Е (for more on “soft” - palatalised - consonants see lesson 10). Note that in Russian, consonants [k], [g] and [x] are never followed by the vowel [ɨ] represented by the letter Ы. They only can be followed by И [i].
